    Sharp asymptotics for metastability in the random field Curie-Weiss model

    In this paper we study the metastable behavior of one of the simplest disordered spin system, the random field Curie-Weiss model. We will show how the potential theoretic approach can be used to prove sharp estimates on capacities and metastable exit times also in the case when the distribution of the random field is continuous. Previous work was restricted to the case when the random field takes only finitely many values, which allowed the reduction to a finite dimensional problem using lumping techniques. Here we produce the first genuine sharp estimates in a context where entropy is important.Comment: 56 pages, 5 figure

    Quark-Hadron Duality in Structure Functions

    Quark-hadron duality is studied in a systematic way for both the unpolarized and polarized structure functions, by taking into account all the available data in the resonance region.In both cases, a detailed perturbative QCD based analysis of the structure functions integrals in the resonance region is performed: non perturbative contributions are disentangled, and higher twist terms are evaluated. A different behavior between the unpolarized and polarized structure functions at low Q^2 is found.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    A large fraction of the world data on both polarized and unpolarized inclusive epep scattering at large Bjorken xx lies in the resonance region where a correspondence with the deep inelastic regime, known as Bloom and Gilman's duality, was observed. Recent analyses of the Q2Q^2 dependence of the data show that parton-hadron duality is inconsistent with the twist expansion at low values of the final state invariant mass.     From Passive to Active: A New Model for Library Orientation

    Objectives This poster shares the experience of academic librarians turning a traditional, passive library orientation at a Graduate Medical Education Fair for new residents into an active learning activity. Methods Every summer, new residents enter postgraduate medical training programs at the medical center. In an effort to introduce the library early in their clinical careers, liaison librarians have participated at a Graduate Medical Education fair since 2012. In the past, the library’s orientation activity consisted of a table full of paper handouts, staffed by overzealous librarians. Feedback from the residents, however, revealed that they politely collected the paperwork but frequently used or understood little of its content. In 2016, the library orientation for new residents was completely redesigned and updated. The traditional library handouts were replaced by an active learning exercise centered around a poster that highlighted the essential resources and services provided by the library. Residents were asked to spend just 1 minute reading through the library poster, and then invited to complete a brief poster survey. Results Results of this new orientation format were quite revealing. Completed poster surveys were returned by more than 85% of the residents, showing that they liked the poster format and its effectiveness in introducing the library. The poster also prompted many questions and interesting conversations among residents and librarians right on the spot. The simple design of the survey questions encouraged residents to identify what they liked and wanted to learn more about the library. In addition, the survey fostered a perfect opportunity to ask questions about anything important that was included or missing from the poster. Conclusions Librarians plan to continue to use this poster driven learning activity, to study its results, to modify its content when appropriate, and to build on its success in other library presentations

    On soft capacities, quasi-stationary distributions and the pathwise approach to metastability

    Motivated by the study of the metastable stochastic Ising model at subcritical temperature and in the limit of a vanishing magnetic field, we extend the notion of (κ\kappa, λ\lambda)-capacities between sets, as well as the associated notion of soft-measures, to the case of overlapping sets. We recover their essential properties, sometimes in a stronger form or in a simpler way, relying on weaker hypotheses. These properties allow to write the main quantities associated with reversible metastable dynamics, e.g. asymptotic transition and relaxation times, in terms of objects that are associated with two-sided variational principles. We also clarify the connection with the classical "pathwise approach" by referring to temporal means on the appropriate time scale.Comment: 29 pages, 1 figur

    Thermodynamic Limit for Mean-Field Spin Models

    If the Boltzmann-Gibbs state ωN\omega_N of a mean-field NN-particle system with Hamiltonian HNH_N verifies the condition ωN(HN)≥ωN(HN1+HN2) \omega_N(H_N) \ge \omega_N(H_{N_1}+H_{N_2}) for every decomposition N1+N2=NN_1+N_2=N, then its free energy density increases with NN. We prove such a condition for a wide class of spin models which includes the Curie-Weiss model, its p-spin generalizations (for both even and odd p), its random field version and also the finite pattern Hopfield model. For all these cases the existence of the thermodynamic limit by subadditivity and boundedness follows.Comment: 15 pages, few improvements. To appear in MPE

    Design Of An Induction Probe For Simultaneous Measurements Of Permittivity And Resistivity

    In this paper, we propose a discussion of the theoretical design and move towards the development and engineering of an induction probe for electrical spectroscopy which performs simultaneous and non invasive measurements on the electrical RESistivity \rho and dielectric PERmittivity \epsilon r of non-saturated terrestrial ground and concretes (RESPER probe). In order to design a RESPER which measures \rho and \epsilon r with inaccuracies below a prefixed limit (10%) in a band of low frequencies (LF) (B=100kHz), the probe should be connected to an appropriate analogical digital converter (ADC), which samples in uniform or in phase and quadrature (IQ) mode, otherwise to a lock-in amplifier. The paper develops only a suitable number of numerical simulations, using Mathcad, which provide the working frequencies, the electrode-electrode distance and the optimization of the height above ground minimizing the inaccuracies of the RESPER, in galvanic or capacitive contact with terrestrial soils or concretes, of low or high resistivity. As findings of simulations, we underline that the performances of a lock-in amplifier are preferable even when compared to an IQ sampling ADC with high resolution, under the same operating conditions. As consequences in the practical applications: if the probe is connected to a data acquisition system (DAS) as an uniform or an IQ sampler, then it could be commercialized for companies of building and road paving, being employable for analyzing "in situ" only concretes; otherwise, if the DAS is a lock-in amplifier, the marketing would be for companies of geophysical prospecting, involved to analyze "in situ" even terrestrial soils.Comment: 37 pages, 7 figures, 3 table

    Dual Instantons in Anti-membranes Theory

    We introduce two ansatzs for the 3-form potential of Euclidean 11d supergravity on skew-whiffed AdS_4 X S^7 background which results in two scalar modes with m^2=-2 on AdS_4. Being conformally coupled with a quartic interaction it is possible to find the exact solutions of the scalar equation on this background. These modes turn out to be invariant under SU(4) subgroup of SO(8) isometry group, whereas there are no corresponding SU(4) singlet BPS operators of dimensions one or two on the boundary ABJM theory. Noticing the interchange of 8_s and 8_c representations under skew-whiffing in the bulk, we propose the theory of anti-membranes should similarly be obtained from ABJM theory by swapping these representations. In particular, this enables us to identify the dual boundary operators of the two scalar modes. We deform the boundary theory by the dual operators and examine the fermionic field equations and compare the solutions of the deformed theory with those of the bulk.Comment: 14 pages, minor changes, added ref

    On the reconstruction of planar lattice-convex sets from the covariogram

    A finite subset KK of Zd\mathbb{Z}^d is said to be lattice-convex if KK is the intersection of Zd\mathbb{Z}^d with a convex set. The covariogram gKg_K of K⊆ZdK\subseteq \mathbb{Z}^d is the function associating to each u \in \integer^d the cardinality of K∩(K+u)K\cap (K+u). Daurat, G\'erard, and Nivat and independently Gardner, Gronchi, and Zong raised the problem on the reconstruction of lattice-convex sets KK from gKg_K. We provide a partial positive answer to this problem by showing that for d=2d=2 and under mild extra assumptions, gKg_K determines KK up to translations and reflections. As a complement to the theorem on reconstruction we also extend the known counterexamples (i.e., planar lattice-convex sets which are not reconstructible, up to translations and reflections) to an infinite family of counterexamples.Comment: accepted in Discrete and Computational Geometr
